The Komainu of Osaka have walked a different historical path compared to those of Edo. During the Edo period, in the castle town of Osaka, the stonecutter district remained fixed, with quarries relatively nearby, limiting opportunities for various types to emerge and resulting in the perpetuation of similar Komainu designs. As a result, their design evolution may be considered less varied. Many of these Komainu are characterized by a squat, round shape, button noses, and fan-shaped tails. Comparative studies of Komainu not only in Osaka but also across the Kansai region have been conducted. Enjoy exploring the differences with Komainu from the Kanto region and the changes in Komainu across the Kansai region.
